Looking after you and your baby properly will mean trying to make the most of your money. Making your cash go as far as possible will take a bit of planning. You might want to give your baby everything, but if you don’t have much money, working out what you and your baby actually need is what is really important. Your baby just needs you to love and care for him or her. Babies and small children don’t care if their buggy is not the top of the range or if you buy all their clothes in a second hand shop. You don't have to spend lots of money on expensive toys or clothes to show you love your baby.
Working it out.
If you are pregnant or just have recently had a baby, check out as soon as possible if you are entitled to any social welfare benefits especially if you are not working. If you are living in your own flat or intend to move in to one with your baby, you will have to work out a budget to cover your bills and all that you and your baby need. The information in this section could help you to find out your entitlements, plan ahead and manage your money. Our Help When You Need It section also provides contact details for other services which you might find useful.
Planning Ahead
Getting into the habit of managing your money could start as soon as you know you are pregnant. While the birth may seem far away there are some things you can start doing in the meantime to get into good habits for later. If you are already a parent, think about the money you have each week and whether or not you are able to use it well.
- if you are working, even in a part-time job try to put some money away each week or month.
- opening a post office account or bank account is a good idea.
- try to work out what you spend your money on at the minute, are you wasting money that you don't really have to spare.
- if you have a credit card (or two) try to clear any balance and reduce using it.
- if you are living at home with your parents, try to work out what you will pay for your keep once the baby is born, who will pay for what etc.
- are you claiming any benefits which you may be entitled.
