Play helps babies to get to know the world they have just entered and the important people in it. You can help your baby learn through play in the early stages by gently stimulating his/her senses during waking time. In the early days of a baby’s life they can get tired very easily, so a few minutes of play at a time is enough. You are your baby’s favourite toy. Sharing time can be all the entertainment your baby needs in the early stage.
If you do want to get toys for your baby it is very important that the toys you choose are safe and are suitable for your baby's age. Check the label on the toy for a safety mark and age guide
Types of toys that might be suitable for your baby
A colourful mobile over his/her cot to encourage interest in colour and movement.
Simple toys that have different textures encourage newborns to stimulate their sense of touch.
The classic baby rattles allows baby’s to experience sound in response to his/her actions.
Toys with contrasting colours such as red, black and white are most interesting to newborns. Your newborn will also enjoy toys with faces or patterns.
If you get a present of a toy that is not age appropriate, put it away until the child is ready for it. If you feel it will never be suitable, try to change it in the toy shop for something else before the exchange date runs out.
Other ways to have fun with your baby
- Cuddling, touching, talking and singing to your baby allows him/her to get used to your face, your voice and your smile. This encourages your baby to feel safe and to bond with you.
Listening to music will calm baby at night or stimulate when he is awake. Choose the music to suit the mood and time of day.
Your newborn will also love being outside. Remember to shade the baby from the sunshine. If the weather is a bit chilly dress baby in warm clothes and bring a rain cover for the buggy in case of a shower. Going outside is good for parents too. It gives you a chance to meet people and show off your new bundle of joy.
Splashing in the bath will also provide lots of fun. (See section on
